Beauty Tip - Layered Lips for a High-Glamour Look

Layering lipstick and glosses is fun and fancy. When you want to create a special look layering is the answer; it is mix and match, it is bold and flirty.

Layering lipstick and glosses can give you any special look that you wish to create from nudes with a hint of sparkle to all-out high glamour.

Gold Lipstick layered over berry

A quick suggestion is to layer a gold lipstick over a berry lipstick and you have an amazing look that is deep and lustrous, shimmering and rich. This is especially pretty for holiday makeup or for any fancy occasion. Line in a deep rich berry or red.

Be as creative and bold as you wish and develop your own lipstick looks and styles, easy and unique.

Tarte Cosmetics Deluxe LipSurgence™ Lip Crème in Wonder - Product Review

Tarte Cosmetics has some beautiful products on the market. They have a uniqueness to them that is attractive with names, packaging and ingredients like maracuja oil which this lip creme, LipSurgence, contains.

Recently having tried this product, I find its appeal is likely to a very young market. As someone who loves lipsticks and glosses for personal and professional use, I did not care for this particular piece. I would however be interested to try their other lipsticks and products that appear high-quality, professional and more "grown-up."

The large "crayola"-shaped stick was awkward in application, especially on applying to the top lips.

It is matte and deep in its shade of "wonder," a poppy color. It is also available in shades of apricot, rose berry and a soft pink. The application faded quickly but worked similar to a lip stain in that the color remained though more lightly. It is slightly moisturizing but not enough in comparison to other lipsticks that are highly moisturizing.

Overall, though it is not for me, I believe young girls would enjoy this lip product and the range of light colors is a perfect fit for them.

This product retails for $24 at their website.

Video and Article - Makeup Formulas and Applications for the Mature Face/Over 40-50

Watch the video here or on my YouTube Channel, The Makeup Ranch.

As women age, it becomes increasingly more important to find the right products and applications to complement the aging process, to help it appear to slow down or even reverse. If you are over forty or fifty and still applying your makeup the same way that you did in your twenties, it is likely time for a makeover.

Following are some tips to help you through the transition and the changes that begin to occur in your skin and facial bone structure. Many factors can cause the actual shape or bone structure of the mature face to change including age, dentures, and injury or illness. All of these variables must be taken into account when applying makeup to the mature face.

Foundation
When selecting a foundation for the mature face, it should not be too dry. It should be somewhat moist but not shiny. For starters, anything with too much sheen or sparkle will “sit” in the creases and draw immediate attention from an onlooker’s eye. Secondly, too much sheen on a mature face looks unnatural. A moist but beautiful matte finish looks best.

See my article on choosing a foundation but just a quick overview, usually liquid foundations are best for normal to oily skin while creams are better for normal to dry skin, in other words, normal skin types may go either way depending on your preference. There is a happy medium with a whipped formula which I use when doing a full glamour look and I recommend for more mature skin  as it offers excellent coverage with a wonderful moisturizing effect. Loose or pressed mineral foundations may work well for most skin types and I do use a loose mineral foundation for even though I have dry skin, I find that they are somewhat moisturizing, more so than a regular loose or pressed powder and I like it for a day-to-day natural look.

Be sure to finish the foundation with translucent powder to tone down any products that may have too much sheen.

Cheeks

A popular sparkling frosted highlighter for the cheeks

Sparkly cheek highlighter should be applied only from the hairline out toward the front of the face stopping before the peak of the cheekbone and the under eye area so as not to get any sparkle into the under eye wrinkles which will cause them to be more visible.

As our faces mature, they can begin to “sink” or look drawn; areas that we previously contoured in darker shades have become sunken and rather than contour to sink them further, we now need to lighten them up and bring them back out to give the appearance of a more youthful, filled-out face and this includes any contouring beneath the cheekbones in a very dark color.

Get in front of the mirror and do a cheek-check. If the area located straight down below the outer pupil and in line with the end of the nose (the center of the side of the face just below the cheekbone) has become “sunken” or hollowed-out, do not contour in the area. Rather, your contour will begin behind it and on back towards the hairline but not all the way to the hairline if there is any change or “sink” in the facial bone structure outlining the face.

Look at these frosted sparkling colors, then imagine what the sunlight hitting these colors on top of wrinkles is going to do to the face. If you want to test it. apply the colors to the top of the cheekbone where the under eye meets the cheek bone, then take your mirror to a well-light window or outdoors to see the full effect.

It can be very tempting to use frosted and sparkled highlighter because there are so many beautiful brands on the marketing offering frosted looks from pale to bronze. If you choose to use one, a sparing application in the area with the least creases as noted above will offer the best look.

Example packs of matte blush colors with beautiful matte highlighters

Otherwise, stick with matted colors for the cheeks and any highlighting.

Eyes

Sparkle or frosted colors can be worn on the mature eyes but is best only applied in the center of the lid in a light color or by partially lining the outer upper and lower corners sweeping upward at the corner and going no further inward than the outer edge of the pupil. Apply colors to the remainder of the eyes in matte shades which work easily to “soften” the eyes.

Lips
A moisturizing formula is best. No dry matte formulas. Use a matte only if it is a moisturizing formula. If the lip color is not moisturizing, the already dried skin of mature lips will appear even dryer.

Beautiful, lighter colors in a moisturizing formula and here is where you get to add more sparkle!

Dark colors are not the best choice for the mature face because as we age our lips tend to become drawn (and wrinkled) therefore making the lips and mouth appear smaller. Darker colors recede so a dark lip shade will only make the mature lips look smaller or more drawn. Dark matte colors look the worst, lighter is better.

One trick, if you want to use a darker lip color, is to apply the shade, then blot, then apply one of the new nude tones over it in a tone that matches the darker shade and be sure to use a brand that is highly moisturizing. This will remove any harshness yet will still allow the darker color that you desire. A lighter glossy lip stain is best for older lips and gives a subtle color while moisturizing.

Finish everything with a final sweep of translucent powder to tone everything down just a notch as well as to set all of the makeup. Include a sweep over the eye shadow and the lip color as well. Apply any lip gloss after the last sweep of translucent powder.

Remember one of the main keys to a great look is to blend, blend, and blend so that there are no harsh lines which will also draw attention to any creases or wrinkles in the skin. Makeup brushes, cosmetic sponges or whatever your preference, there are plenty of tools to help you smooth and blend to perfection.

Stay hydrated; drink plenty of water and if in a dry climate, sleeping with a humidifier can do wonders (I call it a “beautifier”). Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the best things that you can do for mature skin. As we age, the thirst mechanism slows down so we are not cued to drink water as often so drink even if you do not feel thirsty.

Of course there are no rules, you may do as you please, use the colors, formulas and techniques that you like but for the prettiest and most youthful experience, the tips listed here will help you to achieve the best look possible for your age. The mature face can still do many of the looks or products that the young women are doing but it is a matter of how and where we use them. Remember light and less is better with age. You can still use bright colors and make them pop; just be a little more sparing with the appropriate applications.

We can be bold and beautiful at any age and color becomes even more important so that we do not looked washed out or drawn. Step out, step into your color, as long as it is applied in the best light for you, you can wear it well!

End of Summer Makeup to Move into Fall - Includes Video

Watch the video here or on my YouTube Channel

It is always hard to know what to do at the end of the season, during that transition period. I try to work with colors that the transition seasons have in common.

In the case of summer into fall, burnt orange and golden-to-bronze colors can offer the perfect match-ups as we leave the bright summer sun behind and move toward the crisp colors of autumn. We are not there yet however but both shades can work well in the transition. For contrast colors, add a touch of deep green or brown.

Your Fall Look – Own It

Love fall? Don’t feel like you have to follow the season’s trends and run out and buy all the latest unless of course you just want to have the newest looks. If you love Santa Fe-style, make fall your own and love it and create your own fall look.

Revisit some of your favs and faithful standards and refresh anything that needs an update with some trendy fall accessories or a simply a new jacket or pair of boots.  Part of the fun is creating your own look and style.

Have a favorite, to-die for fall piece; that one piece that you can’t wait to pull out of the closet each year? Go ahead, it’s not too early. Pull it out, re-combine, mix and match, until you find the fall look that says “you,” maybe even with a new twist or just a hint of the latest trends, but ultimately “you.” Your fall, your look, your style. Own it.

Chunky, Ethnic Jewelry and its Place in Santa Fe-Style

If you love that Santa Fe-style in clothing and accessories, chances are you also love the chunky jewelry that goes with it so well. Usually with an ethnic edge or from cultural artisans, I believe its roots and inclusion can be traced to the plentiful supply of turquoise jewelry in the region, mostly from Native American crafters.

Many pieces and stones are simply worn in a more natural state.

Though turquoise can certainly be set into tiny and dainty pieces, there are so many large and unique pieces crafted that those of us who truly love the southwest and all that goes along with the Santa Fe-style, can agree that large, beautiful, chunky turquoise pieces set in silver probably rank number one in the jewelry department. There is also a love of the raw and many pieces and stones are simply worn in a more natural state.

With the addition of these pieces to the Santa Fe look, other large pieces have evolved into inclusion due to the large number of jewelry crafters in the region as well as the inclusion of just ethnic clothing and designs in general because it all works so well with Santa Fe-style. Artistic, bohemian, ethnic, free-spirited, cowboys and Indians, all come together in the mix that we call Santa Fe-style and chunky jewelry has certainly earned its place.

Beauty Tip: Straightening Long and Thick Hair with a Flat-Iron in Only 5 Minutes

If you have long, thick and even curly hair and want to use the flat-iron to straighten your hair it can be tedious, time-consuming and tiresome day after day.

One tip for making the process much easier and turning a half-hour to hour procedure into a five-minute procedure, is to have your stylist layer your hair underneath as thin as it can go. A stylist showed me this trick a few years ago and it brought my straightening time from about a half-hour down to five minutes and my hair is usually no longer than my shoulders. If you have really long hair, your straightening time is probably closer to an hour but no more, not if you have your hair layered underneath. For really long hair, you will shorten that hour to ten or fifteen minutes or maybe even five because once you see how fast it can go when the hair is layered underneath, you will buzz right through it.

It is also easy to do this cut yourself if you can get a stylist to do it for you the first time. I had my stylist do it many times but I also began doing it myself with a razor comb. Just be sure to see it done professionally and talk to them about it before you try it yourself so that you don't overdo or take off too much.

You will love this cut and style because you get the look and feel of long straight hair without all the fuss. If you are like me and have thick, wavy or curly hair, you have probably always wanted straight hair. Of course you can get a relaxer put on it but it's nice to have those waves or fullness when we are in the mood or just want a natural look. Otherwise, layering underneath will give you the perfect start to a quick five-minutes to perfectly straightened hair.

Desert Smoke Eye Shadow Tutorial

New, from STYLE Santa Fe, beautiful, colorful but smoky eyes reminiscent of the desert skies as the fires of summer burn in the distance leaving a darker layer of smoke in the distance; that was the inspiration for this amazing look and it is one of my favorites: Desert Smoke.

To begin, apply a primer or foundation.

Use a white matte beneath the brow to the edge of the brow bone.

Next, take a peachy peach and do the crease and inner eye area beneath the brow.

Now, with a light purple, do the inner eye lid on the top.

Come to the outer corner now with a smoky gray and make a wing or a number seven on each side even with the waterline of the bottom eye area.

Blend well without blending the eye color out into the other areas.

Now ring the gray with the purple, on the outer edges of the wing or number seven on each eye corner.
Line the under eye with the light purple outward to the outer edge of the pupil. Fill in the outer edge with a little more gray, touch up the outer light purple if needed.

Dot the center of the top eye lid with a shimmery white or pale pink and blend in being careful not to extend the white or pale pink beyond either side of the pupil.

Highlight with a touch of gold beneath the lower outer eye corner from the pupil to the wing, very lightly.

Blend all lightly, using more peach and white highlighter if needed. If desired, add a final light sweep of pink blusher to intensify and set the look.

You may use eye-liner but this look does not call for it. Add mascara as usual.

The finished look, Desert Smoke, from STYLE Santa Fe

I hope that you love and enjoy this look as much as I do!

Hempz Sandalwood and Apple Body Scrub and Age Defying Herbal Body Moisturizer

Hempz Sandalwood and Apple Body Scrub

Hempz Sandalwood and Apple Body Scrub is lighter than most “scrubs” and leaves less residue in the sink or tub. I have been using this product for a while. The scent is medium and not exactly what I expected from sandalwood (as I do use sandalwood scent in soaps and other products) due to the apple combination.

It contains natural crushed hemp seed oil for skin softening however it does also contain exfoliating beads and is not clear if they are a natural or synthesized product.

The product leaves a clean, smooth feel to the skin though it is gel-based and I do not care for gel-based products of any type. If you do not mind the gel, you will likely enjoy the product very much.

As far as a scrub, it is very gentle in comparison to many others though this may question its scrubbing power. I must say that when I want a serious exfoliation, I turn to other scrubs.

It retails for around ten dollars online. The only reason I would not re-purchase this item is that I do not care for gel-based products and this is a matter of preference. Do I like it, yes. Do I love it? No. though it does do its job, I do not like the feel of gel and I like a grittier scrub. On the flip side, it is gentle enough to use every day.

There is also an accompanying body lotion, Hempz Age Defying Herbal Body Moisturizer which I do enjoy very much and have purchased more than once. It is not too heavy and not too light, just right. The scent is very light and the product leaves the skin feeling smooth. It too contains natural crushed hemp seed oil for skin smoothing. It claims to be firming and age-defying but I do not use it daily so I cannot say whether it performs that particular miracle. It retails for around thirteen dollars online.

Both are very nice products at a fair price for an herbal-based scrub and lotion that each work well.
