Adding Santa Fe Style to Everyday Casual Wear

Part of the fun for me is the challenge of taking everyday garments and giving them that southwest, Santa Fe, look and appeal. When I was publishing Southwest Flair, I did a "southwest challenge" where photographers and models from other regions and countries submitted photos of their "southwest" looks. 

In this scenario, I have used a pair of Larry Levine casual-wear pants and a couple of different tops to demonstrate different looks.

In the first example set, I added a camisole top in similar beige tones along with a pair of black western boots with similar colors as the pants and several pieces of boho and southwest jewelry from my line: a tiger's eye spirit necklace, a boho spirit necklace and a gemstone choker in the same shades as the pants. All jewelry available in my shop.

In the second example set, I switched to a fancy vintage sequined vest that really dresses up the pants. Included the same boho spirit necklace as above, then added one of my cowhide sling bags and a pair of snugly fall/winter boots. Dressy yet comfortable in Santa Fe-style.

You may use these ideas or as a springboard for your own unique style. Have fun styling and experiment with everyday wear to see how you can add some Santa Fe-style to any look.

Easy Turquoise and Leopard Look

Wow, I just got my hands on this little turquoise leopard top. This is a quick and easy look to put together to add a bit of Santa Fe to your style.

I paired it with a leopard print skirt but jeans would look amazing too!

Add a pair of brown boots to set off the leather in the jewelry and the brown tones in the garments and you’ve got quick and easy southwest style.

Olive and Turquoise Gorgeous Combination

Yesterday I designed and created olive and gold-toned necklaces. They turned out beautiful but I was thinking well I just rarely wear olive because I wear so much turquoise.

Then this morning, I saw a blouse in the closet that my daughter gave me with, you guessed it, turquoise mixed with olive. Who'da thought? Viola! Amazing gorgeous combination! 

I immediately did a photo shoot for my shop and blog using different lighting and backgrounds, really wanting to bring out that olive in the mix. Here you will see the photos and the look in this article.

This is just one more way to use the transitional colors of gold, olive, deep greens that come into play between summer and fall while keeping the southwest colors and style. I am so excited and loving this combination! I always thought I had to sacrifice my olive colors for my turquoise, no more!

If you can't find a shirt that has olive and turquoise print (which could be tricky) just do it with layers of olive and turquoise. blouses, tanks, skirts, dress, whatever, the solid colors will work as well and will be easy to put together to achieve the same combo. It could also be done with scarves in the olive and/or turquoise tones, which would be an inexpensive way to create this look and color combination. 

The shirt is a thrift store find. I got the brand new dress locally for $4 with the tag still on it. I made the belt from re-purposing a broken vintage concho belt, and the jewelry is my creation except my anniversary cross which was a gift from my husband. So little money has to be spent to put something like this together. Hit your own closet, hit your friends' closets, go to yard sales, check the thrift stores and you will be surprised what you can easily put together.

You do not have to break the bank to get this look. You probably already have a few nice turquoise pieces, if not, I have both the olive and various real or imitation turquoise available in my shop.

Once you have your outfit put together, finish this look with the coordinating makeup colors to really make the overall scheme "flow and jump": eyes in goldish brown with hints of olive and turquoise mixed. 

I started with a brown contouring base. Add highlighter to lid center and brow bone. Shade, darken or highlight and conntour as necessary per your features, coloring and age.

Smudge brown liner to line eyes.

Then frame beneath the eyes from the outer center of the pupil to the outer eye and sweep up with BOTH a blue or turquoise AND olive green eye shadow over your liner. Re-touch the liner after completing this step.

Add GOLD lipstick for the finishing touch.

My Spring/Summer Pick for Santa Fe Style

Spring brings the desire for a fresh look and if you're going to invest, it probably needs to be something that can carry on through summer, maybe into early fall. Some years I get new pieces, other years I just re-mix and re-match what I have, perhaps with some different accessories. 

This spring though I got this red dress with native designs around the neckline.

At first I thought it too bold, bit then in the same week, I came into these adorable used and scuffed, worn but loved, black boots with red roses.

I still didn't put two and two together though until I noticed the hat that has been hanging on my wall for a few seasons now, a cute little rust-colored straw that perfectly matched the colors in the neckline of the dress and the wheels in my brain were starting to turn,

There was still something missing though and I decided it needed to be a large chunky necklace or two to compliment the red so I whipped up two that I simply adore. Finally I was ready to put it all together, and viola! My new favorite spring and summer ensemble. Ready to stroll the Plaza.

Let this be your guide in finding out how one new or simple piece can suddenly lead you on a couture-journey into sometimes seemingly mis-matched or unchartered territory. I had no idea these stray pieces would tie together for such an amazing southwest look. So keep your eye peeled and when that first piece shows up, look around, scout around and see what treaures you can add to create your own special spring and summer look.

Adding Santa Fe-Style with Scarves and Jewelry

Many days find me piddling with achieving different looks and how you can easily put them together to add a little Santa Fe-style to your outfit.

These two combos are created with the same top, a rust colored turtleneck poncho and changing out the scarves and jewelry.

In the first look, I added multi-layered strands of festive yet earthy-toned beads in rusts, browns and gold, then added a copper and turquoise southwestern cross and necklace. I finished the look off with a gold sparkly scarf.

In the second look, I simply switched out the scarf for a more colorful scarf and more sparkly jewelry which could work more for an evening look.

You do not have to find exact matches but can get a general idea from which to work as you put together your own unique look working with these colors or even with other desert tones. I personally would wear this look with jeans and boots but then I wear everything with jeans and boots!

The point is to experiment and have fun!

2 Easy Pieces that will add a Little Santa Fe-Style to Your Look

It is almost amazing how the right pieces can suddenly add up to a fresh, new and completely killer look.

Let’s take your basic tank top, boots and jeans (which we all have and love). They’re comfy and make for an easy look but let’s face it, we love that Santa Fe-style and we’re looking for a little more; we’re looking for that pizzazz.

So what is it going to take to easily and quickly turn this look into a look that goes straight to way-out-west class? Two pieces. That’s it, that’s all you need. The right top and the right piece of jewelry and you are set to go.

This top (a beautiful gift to me from someone who knows me well) has all the makings. It is loose to go over a tank, it has the earthy rusty colors of the desert southwest in cool designs and best of all the yoke on the back is lined with fringe!

Secondly, for the final pop, add a piece of large chunky turquoise jewelry (just like you will find in my very own line, Designs by Cheryl B.) and your transformation to Santa Fe-style is complete.

Reflections on Santa Fe-Style

This morning I woke to the birds chirping, the window open with sunshine streaming in and the clear deep blue skies of New Mexico overhead. As I sat out to enjoy my morning coffee, I immediately felt the breezes of northern New Mexico blowing in. Santa Fe, the Rio Grande, the Valley, Espanola and Abiquiu and O’Keeffe country were all beckoning to my heart and soul. Though I am in New Mexico at the present, I am in southern New Mexico rather than northern and I long to return to the Santa Fe area. Wondering the Plaza, sipping a coffee on Canyon Road, eating out on the patio at La Choza and staring across to the vistas of Los Alamos as its city lights begin to twinkle after a spectacular sunset awaiting once again, another beautiful blue-skied morning.

Anywhere in New Mexico though there is that amazing sky. It seems so much bigger, and so much bluer. Maybe it is, or maybe for some reason the light just plays differently out here. Perhaps it is possible, the air streams are different, that is why they come from all over the world to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. The wind currents are like nowhere else. Perhaps it is the same with the lighting. After all, the play of the light has itself drawn artists from all over the world to, in particular, northern New Mexico, most specifically, Taos and Santa Fe, both havens for artists. They began coming when the railroad came through and they have not stopped.

Maybe it is the colors of the land itself that reflect against the big blue sky that so sets this land apart. It is these colors, this reflection and this play of light that add to all that we love about Santa Fe-style. Mixing and matching, contrasting and highlighting so much that has affected women’s dress and style here. Think of all the colors in one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting and you get the idea.

It is now late afternoon, the blue skies have clouded to gray with the daily rains of the summer monsoon season. It will likely clear by sundown and make for an amazing sunset as it usually does. My thoughts still linger to the north, filled with the Santa Fe shops, restaurants, clothes and textiles, decor and all things Santa Fe, and how we can further bring this cultural style into our daily lives, dress, and looks. I never stop wondering, thinking, experimenting and loving the idea of bringing all that is Santa Fe-style into our lives and this is more than just turquoise or a pair of boots. Santa Fe-style covers a broad range from the eclectic to outdoor and yoga clothing, western and Native-influenced attire, hippie-bohemian, artsy, business and casual dress, cultural and ethnic, all of which I will cover here.

STYLE Santa Fe - Look Your Best With Linen

STYLE Santa Fe - The Go-To Basics

To start you off I am sharing my favorite, easiest go-to look when it comes to my own Santa Fe-style.

Four basic pieces: jeans, a black tank, boots and turquoise or similar jewelry like multi-wrap bead-bracelets). 

Keeping a tank top in every color that you like will broaden versatility, especially earth and desert-tones, and let's not forget turquoise. And of course, boots to suit the mood, the activity or the weather. In cooler weather I layer over the tank with button-up shirts or light jackets. 

That's it. It's simple, comfortable, timeless, and cool-lookin'!

In Love with Turquoise

At STYLE Santa Fe, we are in love with turquoise and a girl can never have too much turquoise, there is no such thing. From boots to jewelry to clothing, purses and accessories, turquoise says STYLE Santa Fe. Nothing more need be said. 

A STYLE Santa Fe Make-Over

This make-over may be in the opposite tradition of glamour make-overs because although being a  woman with Santa Fe style can be a state of mind, it is also a lifestyle; a toned-down, natural, exuberance radiating the warmth of Santa Fe, the enchantment of the desert and mountains, colors of the rich palette here, and the use of natural fibers.  Jewelry is locally made but of excellent quality and famous to the region.  Fashion styles are comfortable, functional and flowing, drawing on the cultural influences that abound in this region.

Make-up, if worn, is subtler, for an attractive yet natural glow.  Colors are blended to almost mute, and tanning is as easy and natural as simply getting out of doors.  Gaudy brightness and overpowering make-up is not meant for Santa Fe style.  A good daytime routine includes a protective moisturizer, a natural base if needed, just a stroke of light blush, mascara, lip-liner if a business or social engagement, and lightly colored lipstick.  For evenings, go a shade darker and add layered earth-tones eye-shadow applying a light base color from lid to brow, adding a darker shade in the crease and blending well, re-blend all with the base shade once more from lid to brow.

As for hair, a lot of sprays or gels are not advisable.  There are some windy days in the Santa Fe and a spritz of pump spray does a lot better than the aerosol so that while outdoors the wind does not Alift@ the entire style. A scrunched natural look is great for this look and if you have fine thin hair, a perm may be a good way to add the body lost in the dry climate as well as to cut down on the static fly-away that can happen here.  Styles that have to be curled or set in the mornings will not hold in the dry climate, you curls will be gone before noon.

Clothing of course should be suited to the occasion but business dress is a little more lax in Santa Fe, sometimes incorporating boots with a western or desert style, while native American fabrics and prints are popular and worn for almost any occasion.  A carefully planned wardrobe can carry you from home to a casual to a dressy affair; rather it is knowing how to piece it all together that is the trick, how to dress up or tone down with colors and accessories.  Individual style plays a much bigger factor in Santa Fe fashions than in other areas.  With such a mix of cultural influences, a mixture of lifestyles and climates, and occupations, a unique blend of tastes make up our STYLE Santa Fe.  Women who want to add a touch of Santa Fe style need to use a creative flair for fashion through the use of colors, fabrics and cultural influences found in the area.
